New to psychiatric care — or just new to Red Rock? Here are the questions we hear most often.
What's the difference between a PMHNP and a therapist or psychiatrist?
A Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) like Kristine is an advanced practice registered nurse with specialized training in mental health. Unlike a therapist, a PMHNP can diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe and manage medications, and provide therapy — all in one appointment.
Compared to a traditional psychiatrist (an MD), a PMHNP provides the same core psychiatric services with a typically more accessible schedule and a nursing philosophy that emphasizes whole-person, relationship-based care.
How does telehealth work — is it as effective as in-person care?
Telehealth appointments take place over a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform — all you need is a smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera. Research consistently shows telehealth psychiatric care is as effective as in-person visits for most conditions.
Telehealth is available to patients anywhere in Arizona. Many patients find it more convenient, more consistent, and just as personal. Your first appointment can be via telehealth if you prefer.
How long until I can get my first appointment?
We work hard to see new patients as quickly as possible. In most cases, new patient appointments are available within 1–2 weeks of your initial request. Submit our contact form or call us and we'll get back to you within one business day to confirm your appointment.
Do I need a referral from my primary care doctor?
In most cases, no referral is needed — you can contact us directly to schedule. Some insurance plans do require a referral for specialist visits, so it's worth checking with your insurer beforehand. We're happy to help you navigate that process if you're unsure.
What should I expect at my first appointment?
Your initial evaluation is a 60–75 minute conversation. Kristine will ask about your symptoms, personal and family history, current medications, and goals for treatment. There's no pressure — this is a chance for you to share what's been going on and for Kristine to truly understand your situation before recommending any plan.
You'll leave with a clear next step, whether that's a follow-up appointment, a medication recommendation, or a referral for additional support.
Is what I share with Kristine confidential?
Yes. All information shared during your appointments is protected by HIPAA and Arizona state privacy laws. Your records are never shared without your written consent, except in very limited circumstances required by law (such as immediate risk of harm to yourself or others). Kristine takes your privacy seriously — always.
